Embroidery Planning and Calculations
Whether you are doing machine embroidery, cross stitch, or hand embroidery, accurate calculations save both time and money. Machine embroidery thread consumption depends on stitch count, stitch type, and thread weight. A standard 1,000m spool of 40-weight polyester thread typically covers around 15,000â20,000 stitches for satin-heavy designs.
Cross stitch fabric (Aida cloth) comes in various counts â 14-count (14 stitches per inch) is the most popular for beginners, while 18-count and 28-count evenweave are used for more detailed work. The fabric count directly determines the finished size of your design: a 140 à 140 stitch pattern on 14-count Aida will be 10" à 10" (25cm à 25cm), but on 18-count it will be 7.8" à 7.8" (20cm à 20cm). Always add 7â10cm of margin on each side for framing.
Stabilisers are essential for machine embroidery. Cut-away stabiliser is used for knits and stretchy fabrics, tear-away for stable wovens, and water-soluble for freestanding lace or napped fabrics. The stabiliser should be at least 2.5cm larger than the hoop on all sides.
