Embroidery Thread Calculator — Thread Consumption
Estimate thread consumption for machine embroidery designs.
How We Calculate This
Thread consumption is estimated from the stitch count multiplied by the average thread used per stitch, which varies by thread weight.
The formula
Top thread = Stitch count × Thread per stitch
Bobbin thread ≈ Stitch count × 0.25cm (about half the top thread)
Spools needed = ceil(Thread length ÷ Spool length)
Frequently Asked Questions
Your embroidery software displays the stitch count when you open a design file. Most machine embroidery formats (.pes, .dst, .jef, .exp) include stitch count in the file properties. Your machine may also display it.
A typical machine embroidery stitch (40wt thread) uses approximately 5mm (0.5cm) of top thread. This varies with stitch density, fabric thickness, and thread weight. Fill stitches use more than outline stitches.
A standard 40wt polyester spool is 1,000m. Mini spools are 200-500m. King spools are 5,000m. Rayon threads are typically available in 500m or 1,000m spools. Always check the spool label.
Bobbin thread consumption is approximately half (50%) of top thread usage — the standard rule of thumb is roughly two-thirds top thread to one-third bobbin thread by total length. Bobbin thread is thinner (60-90wt) and comes in larger spools (1,500-5,000m), so one bobbin spool typically lasts through many designs.
