Embroidery Design Sizing Calculator — Scale Designs
Scale embroidery designs and calculate stitch counts.
How We Calculate This
Design scaling maintains the aspect ratio. Stitch count estimates are based on area change. Density warnings appear for significant size changes.
The formula
Scale % = (Target width ÷ Original width) × 100
New height = Original height × Scale ratio
Estimated stitches = Original stitches × Scale ratio²
Frequently Asked Questions
Designs can safely be resized by 10-20% without significant quality loss. Beyond 20%, stitch density changes noticeably. Shrinking too much causes thread build-up; enlarging too much creates gaps. Re-digitising is better for large changes.
Stitch count changes proportionally to the area. Doubling the width quadruples the stitch count (area scales by width squared). This significantly increases stitching time and thread usage.
Yes. When shrinking below 80%, reduce density to prevent stiffness and thread breakage. When enlarging beyond 120%, increase density to prevent gaps. Most embroidery software adjusts this automatically.
Resizing one dimension without the other distorts the design. Always maintain the aspect ratio unless you intentionally want to stretch or compress the design. Lock the proportions in your software.
