Hoop Size Calculator — Embroidery Hoop Finder
Find the right embroidery hoop size for your design.
How We Calculate This
The minimum hoop size is the design size plus margin on each side. The calculator recommends the smallest standard hoop that fits.
The formula
Min hoop width = Design width + (Margin × 2)
Min hoop height = Design height + (Margin × 2)
Fabric piece = Min hoop size + 5cm grip
Frequently Asked Questions
Leave at least 1-2cm between the design edge and the hoop edge. This prevents the hoop from distorting stitches and allows for proper hooping. More margin gives better results.
Standard sizes vary by brand: 10x10cm (4x4in), 13x18cm (5x7in), 20x20cm (8x8in), and larger. Check your machine manual for compatible hoop sizes. Using the smallest hoop that fits gives the best tension.
Use multi-hooping: split the design into sections and re-hoop between each section. Many embroidery software programs can split designs automatically. Use accurate placement marks for alignment.
The fabric should extend at least 2.5cm beyond the hoop on all sides so the hoop can grip securely. Too little fabric causes slipping and poor tension. Stabiliser should be the same size or slightly larger.
