Cross Stitch Fabric Calculator — Fabric Size
Calculate fabric size needed for cross stitch patterns.
How We Calculate This
The finished design size depends on the stitch count and fabric count. The total fabric includes margins for framing.
The formula
Design size (cm) = Stitch count ÷ Effective count × 2.54
Effective count = Fabric count ÷ Stitches over
Fabric size = Design size + (Margin × 2)
Frequently Asked Questions
The stitch count is shown on the pattern chart or in the pattern information. Count the grid squares across and down, or look for dimensions listed as (e.g.) 140w x 180h stitches.
Fabric count is the number of threads (or blocks) per inch. 14-count Aida has 14 blocks per inch. Higher count means smaller stitches and a finer finished design. Common counts are 14, 16, 18, and 28.
On evenweave or linen fabrics, each cross stitch covers 2 fabric threads instead of 1 block. This halves the effective count. 28-count linen stitched over 2 gives the same size as 14-count Aida.
Allow at least 7.5cm (3in) margin on each side for framing and handling. For larger pieces or scroll frames, allow 10cm. This extra fabric is trimmed or tucked behind when framing.
