Stabiliser Calculator — Type & Quantity
Calculate stabiliser type and quantity for embroidery projects.
How We Calculate This
Stabiliser type is recommended based on the fabric. Piece size is the hoop size plus grip allowance. Multiple layers are used for stretchy or textured fabrics.
The formula
Piece size = Hoop size + 4cm
Pieces needed = Hoopings × Layers
Stabiliser metres = Rows × Piece height
Frequently Asked Questions
Cut-away stabiliser is trimmed around the design and stays permanently behind the embroidery, providing ongoing support. Tear-away is removed after stitching. Use cut-away for stretchy fabrics and dense designs; tear-away for stable fabrics.
Water-soluble stabiliser (topping) is used on terry cloth, fleece, and high-pile fabrics to prevent stitches sinking into the texture. It dissolves in water after stitching. It is also used for freestanding lace embroidery.
One layer suits most woven cottons. Stretchy knits need 2 layers of cut-away. Very heavy designs on any fabric may need 2 layers. Using too little causes puckering; too much makes fabric stiff.
Cut stabiliser 2-3cm larger than the hoop on each side. It must be large enough to be gripped by the hoop or adhered to the fabric completely within the hoop area.
