Sewing Notions and Supplies

Sewing notions are the small supplies that complete a project — buttons, zippers, elastic, ribbon, hooks, snaps and more. Getting the right quantities and spacing is important for both function and appearance. Button spacing, for example, should be even along the entire closure, with the first button positioned at the fullest point of the bust on women's garments.

Elastic length depends on both the body measurement and the stretch factor of the elastic. Waistband elastic is typically cut to 80–90% of the waist measurement for a comfortable fit. Narrow elastic for leg openings uses 70–75% of the measurement. Always add 2.5cm for overlap when joining.

Boning for corsets, bodices and strapless garments adds structure. Spiral steel boning is flexible and follows body curves, while flat steel boning is rigid and best for straight seams. Plastic boning (rigilene) is lighter and suitable for lighter garments. Each bone should be 1–2cm shorter than the seam channel to allow for turning space at top and bottom.
