Elastic Calculator — Elastic Length

Calculate elastic length for waistbands, cuffs and casings.

How We Calculate This

Elastic length is a percentage of the body measurement, reduced so the elastic must stretch to close the loop — that tension holds the garment in place. The reduction percentages are comfort-fit starting points; firmer elastic needs less reduction, so cut a test length and try it before sewing. The casing width is the elastic width plus a fold-over allowance (around 6mm sliding clearance plus the turn-under and stitch line).

The formula

Elastic length = Body measurement × Reduction ratio + Overlap

Casing width = Elastic width + fold-over allowance (default 1.5cm)
