Elastic Calculator — Elastic Length
Calculate elastic length for waistbands, cuffs and casings.
How We Calculate This
Elastic length is a percentage of the body measurement, reduced so the elastic must stretch to close the loop — that tension holds the garment in place. The reduction percentages are comfort-fit starting points; firmer elastic needs less reduction, so cut a test length and try it before sewing. The casing width is the elastic width plus a fold-over allowance (around 6mm sliding clearance plus the turn-under and stitch line).
The formula
Elastic length = Body measurement × Reduction ratio + Overlap
Casing width = Elastic width + fold-over allowance (default 1.5cm)
Frequently Asked Questions
These percentages are comfort-fit starting points: waistband elastic is typically 80-90% of waist measurement, cuffs 75-85%, necklines 85-95%. Firmer or wider elastic needs less reduction; soft braided elastic can take a touch more. Always cut a test length, pin it into a loop and try it before committing.
Allow 2-2.5cm overlap for joining elastic ends. Overlap the ends and zigzag or use a box stitch. For enclosed casings, add the overlap to the cut length.
Waistbands: 2-4cm wide. Cuffs: 1-2cm. Necklines: 0.5-1cm. A casing only needs about 6mm (¼in) more depth than the elastic for it to slide through. The 1.5cm default here is a fold-over casing allowance — it covers the sliding clearance plus the fabric turned under and the stitching line. Reduce it to roughly 6mm if you are measuring a separate sewn-on channel rather than a folded hem.
Braided elastic narrows when stretched — good for casings. Knitted elastic retains width — good for direct sewing. Woven elastic is firm — good for waistbands. Clear elastic is for swim and activewear.
