Boning Calculator — Corset & Bodice Boning

Calculate boning lengths and quantities for corsets and bodices.

How We Calculate This

The number of bones depends on the garment type. The per-garment counts (corset 12, bustier 8, bodice 6, strapless 10) are typical starting points — real counts are design-dependent and vary with panel count and support level (a corset commonly uses 10–14, often 2 bones per channel on alternate seams). Adjust the bone count in Advanced options if your pattern differs. Total boning length is the number of bones multiplied by the individual bone length.

The formula

Number of bones = Based on garment type

Total boning = Bones × Length per bone

Casing = Total boning + (Bones × 2cm ends)

Tip caps = Bones × 2 (for steel boning)

Avg channel spacing = Waist ÷ Bones (if a waist measurement is given)
