Napkin Calculator — Fabric for Cloth Napkins
Work out fabric needed for a set of cloth napkins.
How We Calculate This
Napkins are cut as squares with hem allowance. The calculator works out how many napkins fit across the fabric width and how many rows you need.
The formula
Cut size = Napkin size + (Hem allowance × 2)
Napkins per row = floor(Fabric width ÷ Cut size)
Rows = ceil(Quantity ÷ Napkins per row)
Fabric = Rows × Cut size
Frequently Asked Questions
Dinner napkins: 45-50cm square. Luncheon napkins: 30-35cm square. Cocktail napkins: 20-25cm square. The most common and versatile size is 45cm square, which works for both casual and formal dining.
Cotton and linen are the best choices. They are absorbent, washable, and improve with use. Linen is traditional and becomes softer over time. Cotton is more affordable and comes in more colours and prints.
The classic method is a narrow double-fold hem (about 1cm folded twice). Mitre the corners for a clean finish. For a quick method, use pinking shears on tightly woven linen. Machine or hand-hem for durability.
Always pre-wash and press cotton and linen before cutting napkins. These fabrics can shrink 3-8% in the first wash. Pre-washing also removes sizing and ensures the napkins are absorbent from the start.
