Table Runner Calculator — Fabric & Dimensions

Calculate fabric for table runners with overhang.

How We Calculate This

The finished runner length is the table length plus the overhang at each end. The cut size then adds an allowance to every edge. An unlined runner is finished with a double-fold hem, so each edge takes a hem allowance. A lined (reversible, bag-out) runner is sewn right-sides-together and turned, so each edge takes a seam allowance instead and the lining is cut the same size as the top panel.

The formula

Finished length = Table length + (Overhang × 2)

Cut length = Finished length + (Edge allowance × 2)

Cut width = Runner width + (Edge allowance × 2)

Edge allowance is the hem allowance for an unlined runner, or the seam allowance for a lined one. If the cut width is greater than the usable fabric width (UK bolts are typically 110, 137 or 150 cm), the runner is pieced from strips run down the length of the fabric, and the fabric needed is multiplied by the number of strips. A runner is almost always narrower than the bolt, so one strip is normal.
