Tablecloth Calculator — Fabric for Tablecloths
Calculate fabric for round, square or rectangular tablecloths.
How We Calculate This
Tablecloth dimensions are the table size plus drop on all sides. For wider tablecloths, multiple fabric panels are seamed together.
The formula
Finished width = Table width + (Drop × 2)
Finished length = Table length + (Drop × 2)
Cut dimensions = Finished + (Hem × 2)
Panels = ceil(Cut width ÷ Fabric width)
Frequently Asked Questions
Casual dining: 20-25cm. Formal dining: 25-30cm. Floor length: 75cm (standard table height). A 25cm drop covers the table edge nicely and is the most common choice for everyday use.
Cut a square of fabric the size of the diameter plus drop, fold into quarters, and cut a quarter-circle arc. For large round tablecloths, you may need to seam panels first, placing seams symmetrically.
Place a full fabric width in the centre and add equal panels on each side. Never put a seam down the centre of the table. Press seams open for a flat finish. Match patterns across seams if using printed fabric.
Cotton or polycotton is easiest to work with and wash. Linen is traditional and elegant. For outdoor use, consider oilcloth or PVC-coated cotton. Choose fabric 150cm or wider to reduce seaming.
