How We Calculate This
Thread consumption for a 301 lockstitch is driven by seam length, with stitch density and fabric thickness fine-tuning the ratio. Per the Coats Thread Consumption Guide, a 301 lockstitch draws about 2.5 cm of total thread for every 1 cm of seam (at ~7 stitches/cm). Because the stitch is balanced, that total splits evenly between the needle and bobbin threads.
The formula
Total stitches = Seam length ÷ Stitch length
Total thread = Seam length × 2.5 (cm thread per cm seam; rises toward 2.8 on thicker fabric)
Top thread = Bobbin thread = Total thread ÷ 2 (balanced 50 / 50 split)
Spools = Total thread ÷ Spool size, rounded up

Add up all seam lengths in your project. For a basic top: shoulder seams (2x12cm), side seams (2x40cm), sleeve seams (2x45cm), armhole seams (2x40cm), neckline (40cm), and hems = approximately 350cm total.
A standard 301 single-needle lockstitch uses about 2.5 cm of total thread per 1 cm of seam (Coats Thread Consumption Guide, at roughly 7 stitches/cm). Because a balanced lockstitch interlaces equal lengths, that total splits 50/50 between needle (top) thread and bobbin thread. So a 4 m seam needs about 10 m of thread overall — 5 m top and 5 m bobbin. Thicker fabric pushes the ratio up toward 2.8 cm/cm.
Small spools: 100-200m. Standard: 200-500m. Large: 500-1000m. Cones: 2000-5000m. A 200m spool is enough for most single garments. Buy larger sizes for production sewing.
Always buy at least one extra spool. Thread from different dye lots can vary slightly. Factors like unpicking, test stitches, and tension adjustments use more thread than calculated.
