Thread Consumption Calculator — Total Thread Needed

Estimate total thread needed for seaming a garment.

How We Calculate This

Thread consumption for a 301 lockstitch is driven by seam length, with stitch density and fabric thickness fine-tuning the ratio. Per the Coats Thread Consumption Guide, a 301 lockstitch draws about 2.5 cm of total thread for every 1 cm of seam (at ~7 stitches/cm). Because the stitch is balanced, that total splits evenly between the needle and bobbin threads.

The formula

Total stitches = Seam length ÷ Stitch length

Total thread = Seam length × 2.5 (cm thread per cm seam; rises toward 2.8 on thicker fabric)

Top thread = Bobbin thread = Total thread ÷ 2 (balanced 50 / 50 split)

Spools = Total thread ÷ Spool size, rounded up

Add an extra spool for unpicking, test seams and dye-lot matching.
