Pattern Piece Area Calculator — Fabric Layout Planning
Estimate the area of pattern pieces for fabric layout planning.
How We Calculate This
Pattern piece area is calculated from the shape dimensions. The total area includes all copies (for cut-2-of-this-piece scenarios).
The formulas
Rectangle: Width × Height
Triangle: Base × Height ÷ 2
Circle: π × Radius²
Trapezoid: (Top + Bottom) ÷ 2 × Height
This is the net pattern-piece area only. It excludes seam allowance (unless you measured it in), nap, and the layout gaps between pieces, so add a margin for waste before buying fabric — see the FAQ for typical allowances.
Frequently Asked Questions
Knowing the total area of your pattern pieces helps estimate fabric usage. Compare the total pattern area to the available fabric area to check if you have enough fabric and plan efficient layouts.
Break irregular shapes into simpler shapes (rectangles, triangles, circles). Calculate each part and add them together. Alternatively, trace the piece on graph paper and count the squares.
No — the result is the net geometric area of the pattern pieces only. It does not add seam allowance, nap, or the gaps left when pieces will not nest perfectly. As a general dressmaking rule of thumb, add roughly 15-25% for layout waste on a standard two-way layout, rising to about 25-40% for a one-way (nap) layout or pattern-matched stripes and plaids, where pieces must all face the same direction. Treat these as estimates, not fixed figures — actual waste depends on piece shapes and fabric width.
Group pattern pieces by grain line direction. Place large pieces first, then fill gaps with smaller pieces. Fold fabric right sides together for cutting pairs. Use the full fabric width and alternate piece directions to minimise gaps.
