Pattern Matching Calculator
Calculate extra fabric needed for pattern matching across pieces.
Budget extra for bias-cut or busy layouts (Seamwork)
How We Calculate This
Matching Calculation
To match a plaid, stripe or large print across pieces, you add one full pattern repeat of fabric for every major piece. That spare repeat lets each piece slide up or down until it lines up at the same point in the design:
Extra per Piece = one full Pattern Repeat
Total Extra = Pattern Repeat × Number of Major Pieces
Total Fabric = Base Fabric + Total Extra
For example, a 15cm plaid repeat across 4 matched pieces needs 15 × 4 = 60cm (0.60m) extra. Count only the big pieces that must align (front, back, each sleeve, large skirt panels) — small pieces that fit beside a larger one do not each need their own repeat. For awkward bias or busy layouts, turn on the conservative allowance to budget 1½ repeats per piece. This rule follows So Sew Easy, Seamwork and Whipstitch; piece length and bolt width are shown for reference but do not drive the matching allowance.
Frequently Asked Questions
The standard sewing rule is to add one full pattern repeat of extra fabric for each major piece you need to match (front, back, each sleeve, large skirt panels). So extra fabric = pattern repeat × number of major pieces. A 6cm plaid repeat across 4 matched pieces needs 24cm extra. Larger repeats and more matched pieces need proportionally more.
A pattern repeat is the distance before the printed or woven design repeats itself. It is measured vertically (lengthwise) on the fabric. Common repeats range from 5cm (small prints) to 60cm+ (large florals or plaids). Check the fabric label or measure between identical motifs.
Matching is most important for: stripes and plaids (especially at side seams and centre front), large floral prints (at noticeable seams), and any bold geometric print. Small all-over prints and solids do not need matching. Diagonal prints and one-way designs need extra fabric but for different reasons.
Lay out all pieces on single-layer fabric, aligning the same point in the repeat at matching notches on each piece. Pin through the pattern motif at seam lines to ensure alignment. Cut one piece, then position the next to match at joining seams.
