Nap Layout Calculator — Extra Fabric for One-Way Layouts
Calculate extra fabric needed for one-way, nap and directional pattern layouts.
How We Calculate This
When all pattern pieces must face the same direction, you lose the ability to flip pieces for efficient nesting. This calculator estimates the extra fabric needed.
The formula
Nap fabric = Standard fabric × (1 + Effective extra %)
The effective extra is a garment base percentage, scaled by the fabric type and the number of pattern pieces:
Effective extra % = Garment base % × Fabric-type factor × Piece factor
Garment base % (loosely after the "with nap" +25% rule of thumb, Sewing.org Napped Fabrics guideline):
- Simple project: ~8%
- Trousers/skirt: ~10%
- Blouse/shirt: ~12%
- Dress: ~15%
- Jacket/coat: ~20%
Fabric-type factor (pile fabrics waste more in a one-way layout):
- One-way print / satin sheen: ×1.0
- Corduroy: ×1.3
- Velvet / velveteen: ×1.4
- Faux fur / fleece: ×1.8
- Other napped fabric: ×1.2
A small piece factor (×1.03) is applied for patterns with more than 8 pieces, as layout efficiency decreases with more pieces. These are practical estimates — always cross-check the "with nap" yardage on your pattern envelope.
