Hem Shortening Calculator — Take Up Hems
Calculate new hem position and fabric to remove when shortening.
How We Calculate This
The calculator determines how much to remove and where to cut based on the current and desired lengths plus the new hem allowance.
The formula
Amount to shorten = Current length - Desired length
Cut position = Desired length + New hem allowance + Pressing ease
Fabric to remove = (Current length + Current hem) - Cut position
The cut position is where the raw edge sits once you fold up the new hem plus a small turn-under margin for a clean double-fold finish. Fabric to remove is simply the original raw edge minus that cut line, so it always agrees with the cut position.
Frequently Asked Questions
Wear the garment with the shoes you plan to wear. Have someone mark the desired length with pins. Measure from the waistband to the pin mark for the new length. This is more accurate than measuring from the hem up.
Trousers: 3-4cm. Skirts: 3-5cm depending on style. Dresses: 2.5-4cm. Coats: 4-5cm. A wider hem gives a better hang and allows for future lengthening.
Yes, press out the old crease before marking the new hem. Use steam and a pressing cloth. For stubborn creases on dark fabrics, use a vinegar and water solution to help remove the mark.
Mark from the floor up using a hem marker or ruler. Let the garment hang for 24 hours before hemming as bias areas will drop. Use a narrow hem (1-2cm) as wide hems will not lie flat on curves.
