A yoke is a fitted section at the top of a garment from which the rest of the garment hangs. Skirt yokes fit the hip area; bodice yokes sit across the chest or back. Yokes allow shaping at the top while adding fullness below.

How deep should a skirt yoke be?

A skirt yoke typically extends from the waist to the widest point of the hip (15-20cm). It should end at or just above the fullest part of the hip. A deeper yoke gives a more fitted hip before the flare begins.

Is a yoke cut on the straight grain?

Skirt yokes are usually cut on the straight grain for stability. Bodice yokes can be cut on the straight grain or bias depending on the design. Bias-cut yokes have more give but less structure.

Do I need to interface a yoke?

Waistband-style yokes benefit from lightweight interfacing for stability. Bodice yokes usually do not need interfacing unless the fabric is very lightweight. Interface the facing/lining side, not the outer fabric.

How We Calculate This

Yoke dimensions are calculated from the body measurements. A skirt yoke is a front/back half-pattern that tapers from the waist to the hip; a bodice (back) yoke is based on your across-back width (arm-fold to arm-fold), not the waist. Each edge gets the seam allowance added twice (once per side).

Skirt yoke

Top width = Waist ÷ 2 + (SA × 2)

Bottom width = Hip-at-yoke ÷ 2 + (SA × 2)

Hip-at-yoke is interpolated between waist and hip over an assumed 20cm waist-to-hip depth, clamped so a deeper yoke never exceeds the full hip.

Bodice (back) yoke

Cut width = Across-back width + (SA × 2)

Cut on the fold, the finished width equals your across-back measurement; the top and bottom edges of a horizontal back yoke are the same width.

Cut depth = Yoke depth + (SA × 2)
