Ruffle Calculator — Fabric for Ruffles
Calculate fabric requirements for ruffles and gathered trims.
How We Calculate This
Ruffles require strips of fabric cut and gathered. The total strip length depends on the fullness ratio.
The formula
Total strip length = Finished length × Fullness ratio
Strips from fabric = ceil(Strip length ÷ Fabric width)
Fabric metres = Strips × (Ruffle depth + 3cm SA) ÷ 100
Frequently Asked Questions
Light ruffles: 1.5–2×. Standard ruffles: 2–2.5×. Very full/fluffy ruffles: 3×. Lightweight fabrics like chiffon and organza can handle 3× and look beautiful; heavier cotton works best at 2×.
Join strips with French seams or narrow seams pressed to one side. Place seams at inconspicuous points (like side seams of the garment) rather than at centre front.
Common ruffle depths: 3–5cm for a subtle trim, 8–12cm for a decorative ruffle, 15–20cm for a statement flounce. Add 1.5cm seam allowance to each edge.
