Quilting Calculations and Fabric Planning

Quilting involves precise fabric calculations to ensure you have enough material for the quilt top, backing, binding and batting. Standard UK quilt sizes range from cot quilts (100cm × 120cm) to super king (260cm × 260cm), with drop allowances typically adding 30–40cm per side.

Quilting cotton is typically 112cm (44") wide on the bolt. For quilt backing wider than the bolt, you need to piece the backing with a horizontal or vertical seam. Our quilt backing calculator works out the total meterage accounting for seaming and a 10cm overlap on each side for quilting frame grip.

Binding is cut from strips (typically 6.5cm wide for double-fold binding) joined together. You need enough binding to go around the entire quilt perimeter plus approximately 25cm for joining and corners. Fat quarters (50cm × 56cm pieces) are popular for variety in quilt blocks — our fat quarter calculator shows how many usable pieces you can cut from each one.
