Pattern Sizing Calculator — Find Your Sewing Pattern Size
Enter your body measurements to find the right sewing pattern size. Uses standard UK pattern sizing.
How We Calculate This
This calculator compares your raw body measurements against the standard Big-4 pattern body-measurement chart (Vogue, Simplicity, Butterick and McCall's all share it). It finds the right size for each measurement area (bust, waist, hip). The pattern already contains wearing ease, so you choose your size from your body measurements — never from your high-street shop size, which runs larger due to size inflation.
Standard Pattern Sizes — body measurements (cm)
- Size 8: Bust 80, Waist 61, Hip 85
- Size 10: Bust 83, Waist 64, Hip 88
- Size 12: Bust 87, Waist 67, Hip 92
- Size 14: Bust 92, Waist 71, Hip 97
- Size 16: Bust 97, Waist 76, Hip 102
- Size 18: Bust 102, Waist 81, Hip 107
Note the grade is uneven (about 2–5 cm per size), unlike a high-street chart's flat 4 cm steps — that is exactly why a pattern size 12 has a smaller bust (87 cm) than a shop size 12.
Frequently Asked Questions
Pattern sizes are based on actual body measurements and have not changed with fashion trends. High street sizes have gradually increased (size inflation), so a shop size 12 today has larger measurements than a pattern size 12. Always use your measurements, not your shop size.
Wear well-fitting underwear (or the undergarments you plan to wear with the finished garment). Measure bust at the fullest point, waist at the natural waistline (narrowest point), and hips at the fullest point (usually 20–23cm below the waist). Keep the tape measure snug but not tight, parallel to the floor.
If between sizes, choose the larger size — it is easier to take in than let out. For tops and dresses, prioritise bust measurement. For skirts and trousers, prioritise hip measurement. Many modern patterns offer multi-size cutting lines.
No. While most major companies (Vogue, Butterick, McCall's, Simplicity) use similar sizing, independent pattern companies may use different size charts. Always check the specific pattern company's size chart on the pattern envelope or website.
