Making Curtains and Blinds in the UK

Making your own curtains and blinds can save a significant amount compared to made-to-measure services. Curtain fabric in the UK typically comes in 137cm (54") or 150cm (60") widths for furnishing fabrics. The key to professional-looking curtains is getting the fullness ratio right — pencil pleat headings need 2–2.5× the track width, pinch pleats 2–2.5×, and eyelet curtains about 1.5–2×.

Pattern repeats add significantly to fabric requirements. If your fabric has a pattern repeat of 30cm, each cut length must be rounded up to the nearest repeat to ensure patterns align across widths. Always ask for the pattern repeat measurement when buying fabric. Allow 15cm for the heading turn-down and 15cm for the bottom hem on each cut length.

Roman blinds use less fabric than curtains but require dowel rods (typically 4mm diameter), roman blind tape, and a batten or headrail. The fabric is cut as a single width where possible, with rod pockets spaced 20–30cm apart. Lining extends the life of curtains and blinds by protecting the face fabric from sun damage.
